Why Old People Dress Funny

Have you ever passed by a large store window and felt that perhaps your mother was walking next to you, only to discover it was your own reflection in the glass? It may be surprising and a little disheartening to learn that you have become your mother. How did that happen? And why do older people dress funny?

  • Nearly every piece of my current “casual” wardrobe is emblazoned with the logos of places I have worked or organizations for which I have volunteered. I paid for it, I’m wearing it!
  • Elastic waistbands are my new best friend because the fasteners on jeans and slacks are too hard to grip with arthritic fingers. (Especially, when they’re probably a size too small.)
  • Ugly shoes; because after being stepped on for over 70 years, my feet have developed a mind of their own. Toes wandering off in all directions and arches that, like water, are seeking their own level, all need to seek cover under Velcro fasteners. And no high heels. Let’s face it, they don’t fool anyone. I’m still short.
  • A large purse is required. Someone needs to carry the first-aid supplies, flashlights, prescription medications, magnifying glass, tissues, eye-glass cleaner, breath mints, emergency phone numbers and a rain hat.
  • Get used to a perm or wearing your hair really short because you can’t lift your arms above your head anymore. (You’ll notice I didn’t add comb or brush to the purse contents.)
  • I love the look of tunics and long shirts because your waist line will follow the same gravitational path that has put your rear end down at the back of your knees.
  • Make up is expensive and I really can’t see my face without my glasses.

So while I used to dress to the nines any time I was to be in public, I now stroll into the grocery store in sweatpants and Crocs, and offer no apology for my “style” or lack thereof.

My style comes proudly and gracefully because I really have no problem ever being mistaken for my mother.

An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
