The Senior Task Force has been very busy. Our boy scouts have inaugurated a program with us to rake leaves for seniors that can no longer manage that chore. Isn’t that wonderful? They have been busy. But that is what Naperville is all about – to help others.
The scouts have been very enthusiastic about doing this for us seniors. I’m starting this article in late October, so when this comes out in December, I’m sure there won’t be much need for leaf raking. But keep it in mind for next year.
Christmas is always a time of cheerful people, happy music and family. One thing that has changed since my childhood is that our families are now scattered. When I grew up in Indiana, all my relatives lived in the same town. It gave me a sense of responsibility to the “family.” I didn’t dare misbehave, or the whole family would know it and it would be a disgrace.
Plus, there was holiday time together.
I think kids today are missing out on that. My kids, grandkids and great grandkids are now scattered everywhere. There is no way we can all be together for Christmas. I miss that.
“There is no free lunch!” Not true! For seniors and families in need, or those who are alone and need companionship on the holiday, there will be the annual Christmas Lunch. Now in its 33rd year, it will begin at 11:30AM on Sunday, Dec. 25, at the Marriott at 1801 N. Naper Blvd. More than 200 guests are expected to attend.
If you would like to accept this invitation, kindly make a reservation by calling Polly Rhodes at the YMCA (630) 527-6599, or via email to prhodes@ymcachicago.org. Reservations are due by December 11.
The YMCA and the Naperville Park District are the coordinators. This event is paid for through about 50 donations from Naperville citizens and businesses.
Some of my friends volunteer to help serve for this holiday event. I always admire them for that. If you would like to volunteer, please get in touch with Polly, using the information above. Also, contact Polly if you would like to make a donation.
