Each and every month I sit down and address a positive thought to share with all of you, and for upwards of the past ten years that has never been a problem. In the wake of the bombings in Paris, I thought it might be a bit more difficult to muster up something to smile about this time around, but music has once again proven to be the light in the darkness.
Publishing a worldwide website affords me the opportunity of getting to know people from just about every corner of the world, so when tragedy struck in France I reached out to my friends in that region. They were quick to respond and let me know that they were alive, but not necessarily well.
Friends of those friends had been directly affected, and the overall mood around the country (and most of the globe) was one of sadness, as you would expect.
William, a bass player friend living in Marseille, told me that he has devoted more time to making and listening to music since the attack.
“Music is a huge part of my life, and that’s something that nobody can ever take from me,” he said. “I turn to it in times of peace, as well as in times of trouble. It’s the ground beneath my feet.”
It’s my hope that anyone struggling with pain or loss might find solace in sound. Music and sound, combined with other positive life forces, can be a recipe for a bulletproof existence in a world that’s often unafraid to fire on you.
