Four years ago, Ron and Dorothy Rohlicek of Lisle decided to look for somewhere to volunteer.
“We just wanted to help in any way we could,” said Ron, a retired businessman.
The couple walked no further than their own backyard to find Giant Steps, a therapeutic day school serving children, teens and adults with autism spectrum disorders.
“We’re so thankful to have such a wonderful set of devoted and selfless volunteers like the Rohliceks,” said Lisa Cummings Ewers, Development Manager at Giant Steps.
The dedicated teachers and staff at the school are often so busy, that help with administrative tasks like cutting, laminating, binding and other various projects provides so much support.
“People typically don’t realize how big of a difference the little things can make for an organization like Giant Steps,” added Lisa. “It all adds up and impacts the students and families we serve in a big way.”
Without fail, every Tuesday morning and sometimes even twice a week, Ron and Dorothy visit Giant Steps to work on various projects as well as take work home to bring back the next week.
“I’ll be here as long as the need is here to help these kids,” said Ron.
In addition to supporting the teachers and staff, the Rohliceks enjoy spending time working in Giant Steps’ life-skills garden, caring for various vegetables and flowers.
