Pet Words of Wisdom – Walking the dog

-

daisypetswebAccording to the calendar, it’s spring. Time has arrived to clean up the yard from the winter. And it’s time to start walking the dog! We see so many dog surrenders this time of year. I believe it is due to the dogs not getting out as much as they should.

The dog has to get its energy out or it becomes frustrated and can exhibit some bad behavior. Now that it’s “warmer,” the exercise should start back up and the behavior start to settle.

We also see a lot of weight gain in pets with an extended winter. We feed the same amount whether the dog is active as in the summer or more still as in the winter. Without the activity your buddy is bound to put on the pounds just like we do.

Springtime also brings mud season. My kitchen floor can look like a war zone when my three dogs come in the house. We have products to help, but honestly we keep a towel by the door. What a mess! The only thing worse is the toys they find that spent the winter outside and, of course, the worst of them is what they want to bring inside the house.

Still, we don’t know what we did before welcomed Daisy, a beagle; Abner, a beagle Jack Russell, we think; and Emma, the same, into our home, one at a time.

In just weeks Dog Patch will have our ponds up and running and fish for sale. It will be fun to play in our outside play area with our rescue dogs.

We look forward to days that will be warm and sunny. I just can’t wait.
