The Y – Support a kid at camp

-

Danni’s mother was in a difficult spot as school was coming to a close in 2012. She had recently been out of work for more than 6 months and was beginning a new position that paid the bills, but not much else. As a single mother she did not have the resources to keep her active 9-year-old daughter in programs over the course of the entire summer.

bartlesA friend told her about the YMCA fee assistance program. She inquired at the Y and within a week found that she qualified for a scholarship to send Danni to camp.

“A huge burden was lifted off my shoulders,” she said. “The Y helped keep our family together—I could work and Danni could experience summer camp like so many other children. She loves camp and always has a huge smile on her face when I see her. She is excited to tell me about her day!”

This is just one of dozens of stories each year of how support through the YMCAs Annual Campaign makes it possible for children to attend YMCA Summer Camps. Camps begin for age 2.5 and continue into high school. Sports camps, specialty camps, half-day camps, full-day camps— you name it. The Y has something for everyone. Led by YMCA “Professional Role Models,” campers experience unique activities and adventures that build confidence and grow self reliance. They also have a lot of fun, just like Danni!

Unique programs stand out this summer.

Y Be Fit Fitness Camp for 7-14 year olds focuses on physical activity through team sports, small group activities, partner sports and individual workouts. This camp is great for youth who want to improve their physical conditioning in a fun, active way.

Camp E.D.G.E. (Educate, Develop, Give, Experience) for grades 6-11 teaches responsibility, cooperation, leadership, problem- solving and the rewards of giving to others. Youth participate in supervised volunteer activities at local not-for-profit organizations.

Summer is just around the corner. Visit www.ymcachicago.org to send your own child to camp and/or to support sending a child to camp.
