The flood gates are open at Fawell Dam

-

With torrential rain this past week, the DuPage river is slowly receding.  The flood gates at Fawell Dam –  just northeast of Ogden Ave. and River Rd., and situated within the McDowell Grove Forest Preserve in Naperville – helps to control the flow of water in the DuPage River.

Residents are reminded to steer clear of the flood waters.  The video below of Fawell Dam, with flood gates open, demonstrates the power of Mother Nature.

Constructed between 1969 and 1971 by the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Water Resources, the Dam stands about 26 feet tall and runs nearly 1,500 feet long.  Ownership and operation was turned over to DuPage County in 1998.

The River and Mud Lake leading up to the Dam in the 527 acre McDowell Grove offers many recreational activities. Activities  include trails for walking and bike riding, catch and release fishing, boating and a picnic area.

An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
