Naperville offers helpful tips with flood recovery information

Flood Recovery Information for Residents

UPDATE 12:50PM: As floodwaters begin to recede, the City has created a comprehensive flood recovery webpage at www.naperville.il.us/floodrecovery.aspx to assist residents impacted by the recent rains. The Washington Street, Main Street and Jefferson Street Bridges are now open.

Editor’s Note: Though the Eagle Street Bridge over the DuPage River in downtown Naperville remains closed at noon, water is receding and the bridge  likely will reopen soon. Yet, bridges or not, you can get to downtown Naperville to shop and dine.  You just can’t travel as many routes north and south through downtown just yet.  Note also that we observed many businesses throughout the city are open and delivery trucks are busy, busy, too. Simply call ahead to any merchant or restaurant to be sure. Heaven on Seven, for one right near the Riverwalk, is open for lunch.

Patience is a virtue and you can get downtown from the south by taking River Road north, Ogden east and Washington St. south.

Daffodils greeted us this morning, traditional symbols of unrequited love, happiness, new beginnings or regard. How timely, Dick Tracy.

Carpeting/Construction Materials/Electronics Disposal

For those residents who have experienced flooding in their homes, Allied Waste will collect all carpeting placed at the curb through the end of next week, provided the carpeting is bundled in segments no more than four feet in length, two feet wide and weighing no more than 60 pounds. Collection of the carpet will occur on a resident’s regularly scheduled garbage day. As a reminder, the City has unlimited garbage collection. Residents are asked to continue to use containers up to 32 gallons in capacity and 60 pounds in weight or one of the City-issued garbage carts. Furniture and appliances are included in the normal collection.

Collection of construction materials such as drywall and lumber will continue to be limited to two 32-gallon containers. Any electronics may be disposed of at the City’s Recycling Drop-Off Center, located at 180 Fort Hill Drive, from 8AM to 4PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Electronics cannot be placed at the curb, per State law.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

The City’s Household Hazardous Waste drop-off facility is located behind Fire Station No. 4, 1979 Brookdale Road. The facility is open Saturdays and Sundays, from 9AM to 2PM. No material may be dropped off at any other time. For a full list of accepted items and procedures, please visit www.naperville.il.us/hhw.aspx.

Please note that latex paint is not a hazardous material. To discard leftover latex paint in the trash, it must first be hardened. Leave the lid off, or to expedite the process, add an absorbent such as cat litter, oil dry or saw dust. Once the liquid paint is absorbed, place the can in the garbage with the lid off so the driver can tell that the paint is dry.

Natural Gas Service

Nicor has provided a flood fact sheet available to view at www.naperville.il.us/floodrecovery.aspx. Residents who have natural gas meters or appliances under water SHOULD NOT attempt to turn them off. Nicor can be reached at (888) 642-6748.

Claim Inquiries

Kindly call (630) 420-6095 with any flood-related claim inquiries and they will be routed appropriately.

Please continue to view the City’s interactive flood map for the latest information on road closures and standing water on the City’s website at www.naperville.il.us.

As a reminder, throughout the day, if people encounter standing water on streets at any location, they should not drive or walk through the area. For their safety, the public should stay away from all ponds and the DuPage River.
