‘Buy a Brick’ Campaign continues along the Riverwalk

During the Riverwalk 2000 fundraiser launched in 1997, the Daily Herald sponsored a “Buy a Brick” ad campaign featuring different residents holding the “Your Name Here” brick.

Today, the initiative that gives individuals the opportunity to write a message to be engraved on a brick or a granite stone continues to be a popular gift item and a way to support the Riverwalk Foundation.
Find complete details with photos about this personalized gift in a story featured at www.positivelynaperville.com. Search “Buy a Brick.”

To order a 4 x 8 brick ($150) for the Riverwalk extension or an 8 x 8 brick ($250) for Fredenhagen Park, simply send a check made payable to the Riverwalk Foundation with your 12 character per line, 3-line ($150) or 6-line message ($250) to Jan Erickson, Riverwalk Administrator, City of Naperville, TED Business Group, 400 S. Eagle Street, Naperville, IL 60540. Include your name, address, phone number, e-mail or other contact information.

Park District recreation director and 5 others honored for civic service

At their tenth anniversary dinner on Feb. 22, the Rotary Club of Naperville Downtown named the Park District’s Director of Recreation Brad Wilson a Paul Harris Fellow.

According to the Rotary Club’s website, individual Rotary clubs may award Paul Harris fellowships to individuals who meet high professional and personal standards set forth by Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary. The other five Paul Harris Fellows from the community honored on Feb. 22 include Bryan Ogg, Pat Bowler, Jane DiGiovine, Tom Jordan, and Tim Johnson.

Brad Wilson has been with the Naperville Park District for 18 years, beginning as an intern, then a program manager and now directing the growing department of recreation, which includes administration of more than 1,500 programs and multiple facilities including the new Fort Hill Activity Center. Wilson also works with many community partners, including School Districts 203 and 204, athletic affiliates and interest groups to bring quality recreation to the community.

“This is a well deserved award for someone who is a leader in the park and recreation industry,” said Naperville Park District Executive Director Ray McGury. “I’m so fortunate to have someone of Brad’s caliber on our team, as is our community.”

62nd Annual Kiwanis Pancake Festival is March 18 at NCHS

The Naperville Evening Kiwanis Club will host its Pancake Festival fundraiser on March 18. The annual event, now in its 62nd year, raised more than $25,000 for community nonprofits in 2016.

This year’s Pancake Festival will feature the all-you-can-eat Pancake and Sausage meal, live music from five Naperville junior high school bands and choral groups, cash and prize raffle and a children’s area with games, face painting and activities. In addition, DuPage Children’s Museum will provide an interactive activity.

“The Kiwanis Pancake Festival fundraiser is more than an amazing tradition that I’ve enjoyed with my family,” said Dave Cleveland, co-chair of the event. “It’s a chance to get together with the entire community and raise funds to make a significant difference for children in Naperville.”

Tickets for the Pancake Festival fundraiser are available for $8 per ticket (preschool children are free) at Anderson’s Bookstore, Casey’s Foods and Oswald’s Pharmacy, or from any Kiwanis member. The event runs from 7AM to noon, and will take place at the Naperville Central High School cafeteria at West Street and Hillside. Parking is free in the school lots.

As the single largest fundraiser for the Kiwanis, the Pancake Festival relies on the volunteer efforts of not only club members, but on 125 teen volunteers from local high schools. All proceeds from the event are donated to local community groups — last year’s beneficiaries included Loaves and Fishes, Turning Pointe Autism Foundation, Little Friends, Naperville CARES, Easter Seals, March of Dimes, 360 Youth Services, Our Children’s Homestead and the Special Olympics.

Thanks for the fond memories, encouraging kind words and volunteer spirit to attend meetings.

An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
