Nutrition Knowledge – Happily hydrated

-

As the temperature heats up and we are out golfing, playing tennis, riding our bicycles and swimming at the pool, we need to be very aware of hydrating ourselves each day in the best way.

The water we take in is distributed through our bloodstream carrying with it the good nutrients that we need, as well as carrying away the toxins that result from our body processes. Not hydrating properly can compromise the necessary functions that keep us healthy. When we are in the heat, especially exercising in the heat, we have a greater need for water.

The first thing we need to do to be properly hydrated each day is start our day with a large glass of water. This gets our body processes going.

The next step is to determine what our activities will be that day. If we are inside most of the day or not engaging in physical activity, our minimum number of ounces should be enough. To calculate this, we take our body weight, divide in half and this gives the number of ounces needed each day at a minimum.

However, if we are going to be out in the sun and heat we must replenish the additional water we lose through sweating. Having a plan for consuming our necessary ounces of water will help us get what we need.

Sports drinks should be reserved for use only when we have a very strenuous output of energy and sweat that would require some electrolytes. Otherwise, for most of us, plain water is the best, with a healthy snack after our activity to replenish nutrients and electrolytes. A snack of lightly salted nuts and fruit can accomplish this.

So before heading out, make a hydration plan to fully enjoy the beautiful weather and all Naperville has to offer.
