At the movies: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice

-

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill as both Batman and Superman respectively, is DC Comics’ first major effort at establishing a multidimensional, cinematic universe, similar to that of Marvel’s Avengers. But does DC’s first attempt compare to Marvel’s past successes? The short answer is yes. Despite the minor controversy surrounding Ben Affleck’s casting, he did not appear to be out of place or uncomfortable within the caped crusader’s distinct cowl. Affleck’s age and the natural, subtle hubris he seems to bring to the majority of his roles, fit well with Bruce Wayne’s confident, playboy demeanor. Yet, he was still able to capture the internal turmoil that haunts Bruce as a result of his parents tragic murder when he was a boy. Cavill successfully did what every other decent Superman actor has done before him and that is stand straight and tall and look powerful. Not to take away from his performance, it’s just that their isn’t much that goes into portraying Clark Kent/Superman.

For years now it’s been clear that DC was going to take a more serious, gritty approach to their films than their comic book counterparts at Marvel, and so far Zack Snyder’s methods are working well to establish a unique style to the movies of the DC universe. Snyder does a decent job solidifying the pre-justice league relationship and laying the groundwork for any future movie team ups. Plus, a combination of exceptional writing and direction creates a political overtone to add to the realism and intrigue of the movie. Although, the actual Batman versus Superman conflict leaves something to be desired. Not to mention tiny issues here and there that may diminish the general viewing experience for hardcore comic fans, but may go unnoticed by casual moviegoers.

All minor qualms aside, Batman V Superman was able to deliver a strongly cast, surprisingly well-written, rendition of two of graphic literature’s most cherished characters, maintaining the integrity of the man of steel and the dark knight’s treasured mythos while paving the way for a new generation of DC superheroes to take the silver screen.

I give Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice 3 of 4 stars.
