Art Talk – . . . Where No Man Has Gone Before

-

Ever since Eve took a bite of the forbidden fruit thousands of years ago, mankind has been breaking barriers. And the trend continues: records are shattered, lines are crossed, walls are penetrated. Boundaries, whether real or imagined, metaphorically or literally, are tested daily as individuals forge ahead into unchartered territories. Think about it: what barriers have you broken lately? The Naperville Art League would like to know!

You are invited to transform your thoughts into an art form and submit it to “Broken Barriers,” the Naperville Art League’s (NAL) 13th annual public art competition. This year’s theme, inspired by the collaboration between NAL and fellow nonprofit Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry, challenges community members to channel their rebellious side and show gallery goers how to break the rules.

Participation in this challenge is open to high school students, college students and adults. Entrants may submit one piece of their work in virtually any media. Pieces may be representational or abstract and must be original in design, concept and execution. An artist’s statement, explaining why the submission supports the theme, is required.

Cash awards will be given for Best of Show and Awards of Excellence. Entry forms and details on media, size and other requirements are available at the Naperville Art League, by calling (630) 355-2530.

Entries for “Broken Barriers” will be accepted at the League’s Fine Art Center and Gallery, 508 N. Center St., through February 20 (although NAL insiders have indicated that the deadline will be extended to March 5). The works will then be on exhibit from March 9 through March 19, with a special reception and awards ceremony from 2PM to 4PM on Sunday, March 13.
