Veterans in Touch – From the Service Officer

-

Great News! The Hines Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) will be at Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 from 9AM to 2PM on the first Tuesday of each month beginning in January of 2016. That would be January 5. The address is 908 West Jackson Ave.

WALK-INS ARE WELCOME! (Yes, that was a shout out.)

The MMU is the latest tool Hines VA Hospital is using to reach out to area Veterans to enroll them in and provide them with top quality VA healthcare. Veterans can register for VA Healthcare and receive primary care services monthly right on the mobile clinic that features two separate exam rooms and a counseling room.

What does this mean for you? Simply put it is a one stop shop. For all of you Veterans that have been putting off enrolling in VA Healthcare, there are now no excuses. When you come to enroll make sure you have a copy of your DD-214 and income information from the previous year.

For many Veterans who tried to enroll for VA healthcare in the past they were denied because their assets were too high. The VA no longer looks at assets only your income.

At the present time we are also trying to coordinate having a Veteran Service Officer available to help Veterans fill out claims for benefits/compensation. I’ll know more as January rolls around. If you have any questions you can always call me at (630) 240-1645.

Over the past several years I have talked to many WWII and Korean War Veterans who have had bad experiences with the VA. This is not the same VA. I know you read a lot in the paper about their failings, but I will tell you that the Veterans in our area are receiving excellent care and have had good experiences with the VA. The doctors, nurses and social workers are truly dedicated. And they care for Veterans.

On another note, do you or your family members know where your discharge papers or DD-214 are? To get any VA benefits up to and including burial benefits you will be asked for those papers. Don’t wait until an emergency arises and then try to find them.
