My parents felt it was important for the kids to grow up with a dog. We had many. Our first, at least the first I remember, was a little beagle named Tiger.
I was very young and I learned about life and sadly death from Tiger as he was hit by a car and killed.
We had a Basset Hound named Max and several Old English Sheepdogs. By then I was in college. I had a guinea pig named Ernie throughout college, even though I was the chair of the committee to keep pets off campus. I met my wife who had cats and that was it for dogs until three years ago.
Here’s what I’ve discovered about dogs.
Dogs are much more work than cats. I knew my cats pooped everyday, I just didn’t have to be there to see it. My cats loved me and would choose to spend time with me. My dogs love me and are all over me all the time.
Abner, dog, wants to show me a toy every time I leave and come back. He carefully chooses a different one each time.
Porter Wagoner, cat, will bring me a toy when he wants to play. Actually within two feet of me. My dogs and cats both like to sit on the couch with me, but not together. When I’m stressed or upset, we all will sit together on the couch. Sometimes in a big pile. They know. They are selfl ess. I need to be more like them.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption every day at Dog Patch.
