Nutrition Knowledge – Gardening all year long

-

rp_minta-257x350.jpegIs it too late to start growing some of our own vegetables? Well, yes and no.

Traditional planting of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, etc. would have needed to be planted earlier than now in order to harvest soon. But there are several ways that we can still plant vegetables and herbs in order to reap our own produce.

First, growing herbs outside now in smaller containers will allow us to move them inside as the weather turns. Some herbs are perennial such as oregano, chives, sage and thyme, so if we have a place to plant established plants now, we will have plants that we can currently use and that will come back next spring.

Second, winter crops such as lettuces can be planted after the hot days of summer have passed. Other quick growing veggies that do well as the temperatures cool down are broccoli, cabbage, Swiss chard and spinach.

Third, is a Tower Garden. I use one from spring through the late fall and I am just getting ready to plant my second crop. This is Aeroponic gardening that was created for home use
by the scientist that created the Gardens at the Epcot Land Pavilion. My Tower Garden is a kit that comes complete with the nutrients and everything needed to grow 20 plants in a small space, except for the seedlings themselves. The plants grow 30-50% quicker than in soil because the water and nutrients bathe the roots. These gardens grow vertically allowing for a large amount and variety of produce to be grown in a very small space.

All in all it is never too late for some healthy vegetables from our own garden.
