UPDATE / April 18 / Beginning at 2PM Tues., April 22, the public and media are invited to attend the unveiling of the Naperville Prescription Drug Drop Box Program and learn more about this innovative effort to curb prescription drug abuse and help keep our water supply free of improperly disposed medications. The unveiling will take place at Naperville Fire Station No. 7, 1380 Aurora Ave., west of River Road on the Naperville Public Safety Campus.
Original Post: Statistics tell us that one of the main starting points for drug abuse is unused prescription drugs kept in the home. One of the principle causes of accidental drug overdose in children is unused medications left within the reach of inquisitive children. Flushing unused medications down the toilet can contribute to ground water contamination.
Please, don’t share medications with friends and family. Please keep the medications you are currently taking out of sight and out of reach. Please dispose of any unused medications safely. Never keep prescriptions around the house “just in case.” The safest thing for you, your family and your community is to dispose of them through a “take back” program.
To help combat these problems in our community, the Naperville Fire Department is implementing a 24/7/365 prescription drug collection program. Within the next few weeks, every Naperville Fire Station will have a sealed drop box for the collection of unused medications. All we ask is that you don’t deposit needles or other sharps in the container. Other than that it is “no questions asked.” If you have a medication to discard, you can place it in the box and we will make sure it is safely disposed.
Did you know? The City of Naperville offers fire alarm monitoring services to commercial and multi-family occupancies. In the event of a fire alarm activation, every second counts! When our subscribers choose the City’s monitoring program, there is no third party involved in processing the alarm. The signal reports directly to the Naperville 911 Center, saving crucial time in dispatching fire personnel to the scene and avoiding potential delays in emergency response.
