Registration is underway for North Central College’s 2014 Summer Camps and Workshops. Among the 95 opportunities this summer are nine new camps for children and adults, ranging from athletics to fine arts to academics and more.

Camps begin in early June and many run through July and early August. There are five convenient ways to register-in person, online or by phone, fax or mail-with an early bird discount of 10 percent for those who sign up by April 21. For a complete list of North Central summer camps visit northcentralcollege.edu/summercamps; call the College’s Office of Community Development at (630) 637-5560 to learn more.

“We provide quality recreational and educational opportunities in a safe and fun environment,” says Natalie Vivacqua, program director of camps. “This summer we’re hiring even more camp assistants to maintain our 1:10 staff-to-camper ratio; we want to deliver an incredible experience.” All staff members undergo special training and background checks to ensure a safe and productive environment.

Fees vary depending on the length and type of camp or workshop. Some camps last several days and include meals and overnight accommodations, while some workshops may last a few hours.

New camp opportunities

Among this year’s new camps for youth are video production, college connection, design with Photoshop, ceramics, cheer, dance, mascot, tennis, and hands-on learning and building experiences using Lego® kits.

For athletes, North Central College offers summer camps in baseball, pole vault, cross country and many other sports that teach a variety of skills. For example, the track and field camps for high school students offer four different areas of focus in throwing, including discus, javelin, shot put and weight throw.

Participants in the athletic camps can look forward to quality instructors from the North Central community, including head coaches in cross country, track and field, soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, tennis, volleyball and swimming.

Other popular camps include radio workshop for high school students, musical theatre for both junior and high schoolers, and classes in creative writing, meditation, and Japanese language and culture.

Summer workshops & theatre, too

Summer workshops for adults feature photography basics, networking with a purpose, English as a second language, ceramics and mindfulness meditation. Piano, voice and string lessons are available for youth and adults, too.

Three community musicals will be presented and directed by North Central faculty. “Evita” will be staged June 20-22 and 27-29 and is available to adults ages 18 and up. “Bye, Bye, Birdie” will be performed Aug. 1-3 and 8-10 for participants ages 18 and up. Dance auditions for both shows will take place May 2 and vocal auditions May 3 with callbacks on May 4. A double bill of “Trial by Jury” and “The Sorcerer” by Gilbert and Sullivan will be performed July 11-13 and 17-19 for anyone post-high-school age. Auditions for these comic operas will be May 10 with callbacks May 13.
