The Y – Tips to stay active this fall

-

Fall is in the air. Days are getting shorter and nights are getting cooler. This season is the time of year we start to hibernate and, in some cases, start to put on our winter coat (weight gain). How can we be intentional about staying active as we head in to the last quarter of the year?

judy_ellertsonWhy not take a walk in your neighborhood one or two nights a week? Create a neighborhood walking group where you can socialize as you walk. Choose a 20-30 minute route. Make sure the route has sidewalks and street lights. Have the kids bring flashlights for a fun element. You can continue this activity year round by dressing for what the weather brings.

Check the Group Exercise Schedules at the YMCA. Several options have been added that are “family friendly.” These options allow parents to participate with their children, a great way to role model the importance of physical activity.

Visit your local parks and forest preserves on the weekend. Many of them have great walking and biking trails. We are blessed to have the Riverwalk, Springbrook Prairie, the Great Western Trail and many more within a short drive.

Keep your children’s swimming skills up by participating in YMCA family swim time. This is great exercise while you are playing and spending valuable family time together.

Go apple picking. This is a great way to spend time outside exploring the apple orchard and getting one of your five daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

To be intentional about this effort, print out a calendar for October. Pencil in commitments such as school, work, appointments, etc. Hold a family meeting to plan activities for the open times. Have a goal in mind. Maybe you start with one weekend day per week and one week night. Pin up the calendar where everyone can see it. Have fun and stick to your plan.
