WDSRA: The Best of the Best

-

Passionate. Generous. Fun.  Those are just three of the innate qualities found in the people you see in our programs. I’m talking, not about our participants, but rather our head instructors, program staff and camp counselors. And let’s not forget our volunteers. These are the people who make an impact time and time again in the lives of our participants and their families at every program.

Their passion comes through when you see patience demonstrated in every interaction. It’s shown through a genuine smile that conveys the kindness with which they treat every participant. Now with masks being a part of life, it even shows through their eyes. What is it called? Smizing? And passion comes through with every authentic conversation. Whether asking about someone’s weekend or listening to whatever interests them that day, passion is evident by giving a participant their full attention.

When we think of someone being generous, it’s natural to think about money, But not in this case. Rather it’s the generosity of the heart that we see. So many people are generous with their time by working or volunteering in our programs. They are generous with themselves by sharing their hobbies and interests. People who like sports gravitate to our sports programs as coaches, assistants and referees. Others share their love of the arts by getting involved with our arts, music and theater programs. Then there are those who love to have fun. They can be found spending their time in our social clubs helping small groups of participants enjoy spending time with peers.

What about the fun you ask? Well, that just naturally happens because our programs are meant to be fun for participants AND those working them. Besides, when you have people who bring their passion and generosity to every program, fun just happens!

So when the readers of the Glancer Magazine named WDSRA the Best of the Best in Special Needs Resources (DuPage) we knew it was because of every instructor, program staff and camp counselor in our programs. We know it’s the passion, generosity and fun they bring that make a difference every day. So while we humbly say thank you to everyone who voted for WDSRA, we say congratulations to all the instructors, program staff and camp counselors who are responsible for the accolade.
