Naperville Gardener – It’s March and… M is for Membership!

-

Having been a “woman of a certain age” for some time now, this writer has been bombarded with information, mandates and suggestions as to how I can make the most of the limited time I have left on this earth. Just thinking about it all makes me feel like a little, old lady – at times even writing like one!

Most is good advice – see your doctor(s) regularly, exercise, watch what you eat, etc. A suggestion that I recently received encourages 50-plus adults to join activity groups or clubs so that we can improve our general health and well-being by engaging in three of the most powerful elements of health- mental, social and physical activities. Good advice for all ages, don’t you think?

Our community has many opportunities. Look through this publication for organizations that would love to have you join them and that match your interests.

When I joined the Naperville Garden Club, I was raising two teenage boys and my husband was out of town much of each week. I joined the club because I needed some fun, I like gardening and thought I would have access to the wonderful plants in members’ private gardens, which did prove to be true.

But! Soon I was learning from the guest speakers and our own knowledgeable members and found myself at a higher level of gardening. And then I embraced the missions of the Naperville Garden Club and there I was with other club members installing bulbs and plants around town—on the campus of North Central College, at the Municipal Center, the public library, etc.

Two of our current projects are gardening at Giant Steps in Lisle and Turning Pointe Autism Foundation in Naperville and participating in Healthy Kids Day at the YMCA. What wonderful experiences!

Being a member of the Naperville Garden Club has transformed me from thinking about what’s in it for me (free plants) to thinking about how I can improve my community and increasing my mental, social and physical activities as well. I have been a member for 23 years, enjoying it more and each year, and have made life-long friends, too!

I hope that you can find a club or group that will bring you happiness and good health!

The Naperville Garden Club invites you to a “Connection Coffee” from 9AM to 11AM on Monday, March 16, at Panera, 2775 Showplace Dr. in the “meeting room.” Cost is whatever you would like to eat or drink. Please RSVP to Gale at (630) 212-9560.

More information about the Naperville Garden Club is on our website, napervillegardenclub.org. We welcome new members and guests.
