October Editor’s Notes

-

Ever wonder why Elbert Hubbard said, “Don’t take life too seriously. You’ll never get out of it alive.”?

The great American wit, born in Bloomington, Illinois in 1856, and raised in Hudson, adhered to the philosophy that taking life too seriously leads to being stressed out, scared, angry, bored and without a smile … After his early success as a traveling salesman, Hubbard went on to be a publisher, humorist, artist and philosopher who lived until 1915.

We become philosophical sometimes, too, but we’d rather find humor, even during uncertain times.

So here we go again. The October issue of Positively Naperville aims to present its monthly musings, a shot at the light side while addressing some important concerns. We continually have to tell ourselves to take a deep breath as we seek those golden moments of inspiration when the season changes, glowing with fall foliage and bright orange pumpkins, reminding us of our love for nature before the first frost and all the leaves fall.

And since it’s leap year, it’s the month when so-called Silly Season has never seemed sillier as the General Election welcomes voters by absentee ballot, early voting or from 6AM to 7PM on Tues., Nov. 8.

While you’re considering all the candidates that want to serve Naperville in DuPage County, Will County, Springfield and Washington, D.C., local ballots also are asking advisory questions regarding the Naperville Township Road District. Find the questions as approved by the Naperville City Council and Naperville Township as well as other voter information on the PN Election and Voter’s Guide at www.positivelynaperville.com.

On September 28, residents from Naperville and Aurora met at Meson Sabika to help inform other interested community members about the ballot questions. (Note the featured photo in this post.)

As an added online feature this year, PN will welcome all points of view, pro and con, and will dedicate pages online for letters to the editor that relate to the upcoming election. No letters will be accepted after October 20, 2016. All letters must be signed, first and last name, with a Naperville address and contact info for verification.

Include “Election Letter” in the subject line. Send to stephanie@positivelynaperville.com. Published letters will be at the discretion of the editor. And throw in some election humor.

On that note, we’ll wrap up with a Mark Twain quote: If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.

And then there’s the line attributed to King Henry Cate VII: The problem with political jokes is they get elected.

Trick or treat?

PN Ombudsman
An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
