Always spring ahead and fall back at 2AM.

When the clock strikes 2AM Sun., March 8, Daylight Saving Time begins again. Set clocks forward one hour.

Remember, there is no “s” at the end of saving.  It’s Daylight Saving Time. Yet when you set your clocks ahead to 3AM, you’ll lose one hour.

Go, snow, go!  Delete the “s” in snow and warm up now! Melt Naperville’s snow cover now before the official first day of spring on March 20.

Mindful of the Worldly Words of American author, poet and educator Henry van Dyke (1852-1933), “The first day of spring is one thing and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.”

Battery check time, too!

On another timely note, residents are urged to check and change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they adjust their clocks to the time that will provide a more light into the evening hours.

The City of Naperville has long recommended that through these proactive efforts, residents can help reduce home fire-related injuries and fatalities. Non-working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors rob residents of the protective benefits these safety devices were designed to provide. The most commonly cited cause of non-working smoke alarms are worn or missing batteries.

Changing smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries at least once a year, testing these alarms monthly and reminding friends and family members to do the same are some of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries.

In addition, the Naperville Fire Department recommends that smoke alarms as well as carbon monoxide detectors in homes should be replaced every 10 years.

Spring ahead!

Spring ahead! Though it’s been debatable, the inspiration for daylight saving time is commonly credited to a calculating Benjamin Franklin back in 1784. At that time while in Paris, France, Franklin wrote a humorous essay about how changing time could save energy and candles. Yet it took more than a 130 years before Congress passed the first Daylight Saving Time law in 1918.

Springing forward through the campaign…

Take time now to become an informed voter prior to the Consolidated Election from 6AM-7PM Tues., April 7. Meet all the candidates online at Election & Voter’s Guide. Watch videos of public forums hosted by the Naperville Area Homeowners Confederation, too.

Candidates and elected officials also will put on the green to demonstrate their community spirit when the St. Patrick’s Parade steps off at 10AM in downtown Naperville on Sat., March 14.

Stay tuned for updates in a timely fashion. Thanks for being prepared to enjoy spring festivities planned in this city and to cast an educated vote.
