Focus on Safety – So you’re being pulled over…

-

smith_julieIt’s human nature. You see the red and blue flashing lights behind you and your mind automatically goes into panic mode. If you’re like most people, you don’t think clearly in “panic mode.”

During my time as a Patrol Officer, I probably pulled over hundreds of vehicles. I have seen everything from the clear, calm, cooperative driver to the belligerent, confrontational driver who didn’t listen to direction or anything else I was saying the entire time.

You might be nervous about what is going to happen when you get pulled over, but remember, the officers also have every right to be nervous; they never know what to expect. Officer safety is the highest priority when conducting traffic stops. The more you can do to ensure a safe situation during a traffic stop, the safer everyone will be.

Nobody likes to be pulled over by the police, but if it occurs, it is important to show that you are cooperating. From the moments before and after the lights go on, the officer is observing your behavior. As soon as you see the flashing lights behind you, activate your right turn signal and pull over to the right as quickly and safely as possible.

Once you have pulled over, place your car in park, roll down your window all the way and place your hands on the steering wheel where the officer can see them. If it’s dark, turn on the interior light in your car. Don’t make any sudden movements or rummage through your belongings looking for your wallet until you are asked for documentation.

Do not reach for anything anywhere!

Remember that law enforcement officers are killed every year while conducting routine traffic stops, so it’s understandable that an officer may treat you with suspicion. There is no such thing as a routine traffic stop. If you respond appropriately to the officer’s directions, are cooperative and do not give any cause for alarm, the officer will extend you the same respect!

Until next month, Stay Aware & Stay Safe.
