September 11 remembrance to take place at Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial

On the 12th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Naperville Exchange Club is sponsoring Naperville’s annual September 11 remembrance.

9/11 Memorial Photo by Ron OryThis year’s event will take place starting at 6PM on Wednesday, September 11 at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial, located behind the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St., along the Riverwalk. In case of rain, the event will take place inside the Council Chambers of the Municipal Center. The Carillon bells will toll at 5:30PM prior to the Naperville Municipal Band providing pre-event music at 5:45PM. The Naperville Men’s Glee Club will perform during the event.

Wheaton Christian Grammar School Assistant Principal and School Counselor Roger Burgess will be the featured speaker. Burgess was United Airlines Flight 93 passenger Todd Beamer’s teacher and soccer and basketball coach. Beamer was one of the passengers who attempted to foil the hijacking of the plane by terrorists and reclaim the aircraft, which ultimately crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pa. Burgess, who is starting his 40th year of service at the school, taught Beamer in Bible studies and math.
