The Naperville Fire Department has partnered with the Naperville Police Department and Safety Town to offer Safe Sitter classes. Safe Sitter is welcome to anyone ages 11-15 wishing to become certified to become a safe and responsible babysitter.
Safe Sitter classes teach you the skills to become a safe, reliable babysitter who can also run a successful business. Some of the topics you will learn about include:
- How, why and where injuries happen so you can prevent them from happening in the first place.
- How to decide how serious a problem is if someone is injured.
- How to get help if you need it.
- How to keep yourself safe when babysitting.
- How a child’s age affects how to care for them.
- How to prevent problem behavior.
- How to rescue a choking infant or child.
- How to run your babysitting business.
Sessions are available for the spring season. The cost is $50 for the 6-hour certification program. Visit www.napervillejuniors.org for more information.
Summer Sessions at Safety Town
Online registration for 2013 summer sessions begins at 12PM Mon., April 8. The Safety Town Summer Program is a weeklong, 90-minute per day program for children entering kindergarten or first grade. Throughout the week, stories, games, songs, and videos reinforce the skills being taught. By using a ‘hands-on’ approach, children absorb important information and have fun at the same time. The Naperville Fire and Police Departments, I-Search, Burlington Northern, Naperville Department of Public Utilities-Electric, Animal Control, Naperville Junior Women’s Club volunteers and other community groups help teach safety awareness and prevention.
The nationwide Safety Town program was brought to Naperville in 1978, and in June 1996, the Naperville Safety Campus opened at 1320 Aurora Ave. The program started small, but now serves over 1,700 students in the summer program each year.
The program introduces pedestrian, bike, fire, railroad, bus, animal, water and personal safety. During the week, the children have the opportunity to make real-time 911 calls, participate in a fire evacuation drill and practice pedestrian safety plus traffic hand signals as they ride special Safety Town vehicles on the streets of Safety Town.
