A letter to the editor from DuPage PADS

-

PADS-WEBDear Editor:

On December 21, the first day of winter and the longest night of the year, we remember those who have died homeless here in DuPage County. Over this last year, eight men and women died without a place to call “home” who took part in DuPage PADS programs–as well as others throughout the county. During this time of family, togetherness and security, we at DuPage PADS are aware of the personal loneliness many carry within.

This is beyond a doubt a critical time in our county–a tragic reality that often goes unnoticed among those who are homeless is the loss of life. Many of these people were without family, friends, or loved ones being with them at their final moments, or are present to mourn their loss. Even though these who have died and for the most part went unnoticed, their lives held meaning and value. The crisis of homelessness effects our whole community. We cannot change the lives of those who have died, what we can change is the future of this county where everyone matters!

At DuPage PADS we continue to be a “Lantern of Hope;” hope that is grounded in proven concrete solutions. Providing a home is the answer.

At DuPage PADS, we believe we have the solution to end homelessness by providing housing, coupled with support services and employment. Housing is the cure for homelessness and support and employment services are the pillars that prevent the cycle of homelessness from re-occurring.

Please take a few moments during this holiday season to remember your homeless neighbors who have passed on. We invite you to make a commitment to work with us to end homelessness here in our county in order to prevent such deaths from occurring in the future.

Thank you,

Carol Simler

Executive Director of DuPage PADS
