Focus on Safety – Prevent crime this holiday season

-

The holiday season is always a special time of year. It is also a time when busy people become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. I know the hustle and bustle can often be overwhelming at times, but we can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware for potential crime.

Here are a few holiday safety tips to help keep you safe.

Heading out to do some shopping? Park in a well-lit space closest to the entrance or exit. If this means driving up an additional level in the parking garage instead of walking across the length of the garage, you are better off. Remain aware of your surroundings at all times and move to and from your vehicle with confidence and “purpose.” Have your keys ready before getting to your car so you don’t have to search for them while standing near it. Also, remember where you parked! There is nothing worse than wandering the parking lot searching for your vehicle.

Don’t overload yourself with packages. Being overburdened may make it difficult to respond to a personal threat. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion. Put your shopping bags and gifts in the trunk of your vehicle, out of plain sight.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and keep credit cards that you never use at home. If you carry a purse, keep it close to your body, in front where it can be seen, and cover the clasp or flap with your hand. Your wallet should be kept in your front pants pocket or coat breast pocket. Be aware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, criminals try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.

At home remember to keep those garage doors closed, front, rear, and service doors locked. Even if you are only going to be away for a few minutes. Make sure your holiday gifts are not visible through the windows and doors of your home. After the holiday, don’t advertise gifts by leaving boxes out for the garbage collection. Place them into the container.
