September is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Awareness Month. Midwest Cardiovascular Institute (MCI) is hosting a free screening for PAD from 5:30PM to 7:30PM PAD on Wed., Sept. 29, at the MCI Naperville clinic located at 801 South Washington Street, 4th Floor (North Entrance).

More than 20 million Americans suffer from PAD, a condition in which plaque buildup in the arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs, leading to potential blockages in the legs. Just like clogged arteries of the heart, PAD can lead to heart attacks or strokes. If left untreated, it can be painful and lead to amputation. However, with early diagnosis and proper treatment, most patients can manage the symptoms of PAD and avoid amputation or heart attacks.

This free event will include screenings for ankle brachial index to test blood flow in the legs and detect potential blockages. Results and personal consults will be given onsite by MCI interventional cardiologist, Dr. Krishna Nagendran, who is new to the practice and specializes in treatment for PAD.

Symptoms of PAD to look for in the legs include: pain or cramping after activity, numbness, coldness, sores or ulcers that won’t heal, discoloration, hair loss, shiny skin or a weak pulse. The risk for developing PAD increases with age and is highest for individuals over 50 years old. Smoking increases the chance of developing PAD three to five times. Other common risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and a family history of vascular disease, heart attack or stroke.

Space for the screening is limited and registration is required. Sign up today at https://mcipadscreening.eventbrite.com.

(FYI: Sometimes Eventbrite won’t accept the registration if any of the form fills are not complete. Individuals who experience issues with online registration are asked to call the event organizer at (985) 873-5058 to register by phone.  Or call the Naperville office at (630) 600-0700. Thank you.)
