On Wednesday April 1, 2020 at approximately 7:26PM, the Naperville Police Department and the Naperville Fire Department responded to the intersection of Washington Street and 12th Avenue for a vehicle crash.
The crash involved a 2010 gray Honda Accord driven by a 51-year-old male out of Naperville and a 2002 red Ford Focus driven by a 24-year-old male out of Lisle.
The initial investigation indicated that the Honda Accord was traveling westbound on 12th Avenue when it failed to yield at the stop sign, striking the Ford Focus that was traveling northbound on Washington Street. The Ford Focus subsequently lost control and struck a utility pole just north of the intersection.
A male and female passenger from the Ford Focus, both 19 years of age, were transported from the scene to local hospitals with potentially life-threatening injuries. Due to the nature of the incident, members of the Naperville Traffic Unit trained in accident investigation and reconstruction responded to the scene for the investigation.
Washington Street was closed between Ogden Avenue and Bauer Road and traffic was rerouted from the area until it was reopened at approximately 11:37PM.
The driver of the Honda Accord was initially cited for failure to yield at a stop sign, but the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to contact the Naperville Police Department’s Traffic Unit at (630) 305-5477.
Report submitted by Commander Mike Son, Office of Professional Standards and Public Information, for Sergeant Rick Krakow and the Naperville Police Department.
