Updated Post, Feb. 24, 2020 / According to the Daily Herald, “The DuPage County coroner’s office has identified the man who died Saturday morning in a Naperville apartment fire as Christopher Ganley, 57, of Naperville.”
Original Post, Feb. 23, 2020 / At 8:51AM on Saturday, February 22, 2020, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a 911 call from a resident stating she could hear a local fire alarm sounding from a first-floor unit of the multi-unit residence.
A single engine assignment was immediately dispatched to the location by PSAP. Squad Company 8 arrived on scene within 6 minutes of receiving the call, and reported smoke visible inside of the first-floor apartment. The first arriving company officer immediately upgraded the response to a full still assignment and made entry into the smoke-filled unit.
Companies immediately encountered a victim in the unit which resulted in an additional upgrade of the assignment to a General Alarm The complete general alarm assignment consisted of three engine companies, two truck companies, one squad company, two ambulances, and two battalion commanders for a total of 24 personnel that responded to the scene of the incident.
Companies continued an aggressive search and extinguished a smoldering fire in the bedroom within 5 minutes of arrival. Extra time was taken to extinguish smoldering materials as well as removal of smoke from all floors of the building. Crews continued to perform salvage and overhaul operations for another fifteen minutes after the main fire area was extinguished.
No injuries to any firefighters operating at the scene were reported during this incident and the lone occupant of the unit was found to be deceased inside the apartment.
Initial indications are that the cause of the fire was accidental and no foul play is suspected according to Naperville Police Department personnel. However, the cause of the fire and cause of death remain under investigation.
The multi-unit building was deemed habitable for all other occupants and no structural fire damage was found inside the affected unit. Naperville
Fire Department personnel were assisted at the scene by the Naperville Police Department and DuPage County Coroner’s Office. Due to the nature of the incident, notification was made to the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal by Naperville Fire Department fire investigation team members.
