Hostas are one of the easiest perennials to grow. Notable for their distinctive foliage, their blooms are delightful and can be an unexpected addition to any bouquet. I used to cut off the blooms in my garden, focusing only on the foliage, until it was pointed out during one of the programs at a Naperville Garden Club meeting just how fragrant and lovely the blooms are. Add a bloom or two to a bouquet, give it to a friend and wait for the ooh’s and aah’s. The lucky recipient will wonder where you got such exotic flowers!
Hostas will flourish almost everywhere, preferring dappled shade. But often you will see them surrounding street trees. Combine with other shade-loving perennials or plant an area with just hostas. The small hostas are adorable among the annuals in your planters.
This fall, the Naperville Garden Club will start up its meetings in a new location- Bobak’s Signature Events and Conference Center at Seven Bridges. After many delightful years at the White Eagle Golf Club, we are changing our location to make it more convenient for our members who live on the eastern side of Naperville.
Our first meeting will be on Sept. 23, 2015. The program will feature Tom Micheletti, owner of “The Hosta Patch.”
He will discuss miniature and small hostas and how they can be used in any size garden. He also will bring plants for sale.
Our meeting begins at 8:45AM with registration and refreshments, a business meeting at 9:15AM, followed by the program. I look forward to seeing my friends again after we have been apart much of the summer due to vacationing, entertaining out-of-town company or in my case- marrying off our younger son, Matt, to the lovely Amy!
I’m sure the program will inspire us to use hostas in new ways and our fall meeting always brings guests and new friends with whom to share our love of gardening and other projects.
Paid reservations ($14, payable to “The Naperville Garden Club”) are due by September 15 to: Deb Tritt, 4143 Royal Mews Circle, Naperville IL, 60564.
Guests are always welcome and we look forward to seeing you!
