Thanks to the generosity of Fathom Events, PN readers can welcome in the New Year by winning more free tickets to see these broadcasts at the Regal Cantera 30 in Warrenville.
This month, PN is giving away tickets to three particularly regal operas which all focus on royalty; Verdi’s Aida, Berlioz’s Les Troyens, and Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda.
Verdi’s Aida is certainly the most famous of the three; the epitome of grand opera, the opera features choruses, ballets, on-stage animals and trumpeters as it develops the doomed love triangle between an Egyptian soldier and Egyptian and Ethiopian princesses.
Berlioz’s Les Troyens takes audiences to yet another ancient land as it recounts the tragic affair of Dido, queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, the Trojan founder of Rome. The plot is based on Virgil’s famed epic The Aeneid. This unique production designed by Francesca Zambello received rave reviews when it debuted at the Met in 2003, and while the production cannot promise Aida’s live horses, the audience can look forward to seeing an impressive, full-sized Trojan horse on stage.
Finally, Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda takes the audience to Tudor England as it tells the tale of Mary, Queen of Scotts, facing allegations of plotting to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I and coping with her impending execution.
The live broadcast of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda begins at 11:55AM on Sat., Jan. 19. Encore broadcasts of Verdi’s Aida (Jan. 16), Berlioz’s Les Troyens (Jan. 23), and Maria Stuarda(Feb. 6) begin at 6:30PM.
