Updates for Naperville Festivals, Traditions, Special Events / 2021

Due to the large number of requests to post, then cancel events the past two years, this page is not up to date. It does, however, list many of the city’s traditions, the happenings that help make Naperville a good place to live, work and play.

We hope most will be scheduled soon.

Above / Hello! Throughout the year, the Naperville Riverwalk provides the natural setting for many annual charity walks, concerts and special events. As 2021 wraps up, the Grand Illumination welcomes visitors.  Enjoy the changing seasons along our community’s pride at one of the Riverwalk’s many gathering places. The Dandelion Fountain is located in Civic Plaza, Jackson at Webster streets. (PN photo from Nov. 15, 2021.)

In 2018, thanks to funds raised by the Riverwalk Foundation’s Duck Race (on hiatus for 2020 and 2021), a new flag pole and American flag were placed near the Riverwalk Covered Bridge at Webster Street near the Naperville Township Building.

Be sure to note the recently restored Civic Plaza plaque (See above), now shining brightly to help tell the story of the Riverwalk. What a difference the “Surgeon of Bronze” made for the Riverwalk Foundation to help restore recognition of this City’s can-do spirit and generous donors.

The Riverwalk Foundation also contributed funds for the pedestrian path along the Naperville Township parking lot, just south of the Moser Covered Bridge. This location between Jackson Avenue and Water Street attracts visitors to cross the DuPage River in downtown Naperville where more than 300 shopping and dining experiences help create the vibrant heart of the community every day of the year. Now through the first of 2022, the area glistens with colorful holiday lights.

This month-to-month post is chock full of photos that help depict a small sampling of community spirit. We like to think that our past gives richness to our present.

If it’s December 23, 2021, Santa Claus will be greeting families at the big holiday tree at NaperLights in Jaycees Park near the Municipal Center. Santa plans to be there from 6 to 8PM Thurs., Dec. 23. Bring your list!

Click above for many first-time events and updates scheduled among popular traditions for December 2021. Keep scrolling for a listing of traditions that display a showcase of community spirit from month to month. Cheers for the holidays!

Wrap up 2021 with Traditions & Bold Shout-outs…

Welcome to longstanding and more recent traditions! Instead of mixing, mingling and connecting in this active community, during the uncertainty of the pandemic, many events are on hold at the moment. As “virtual” events and other outdoor events take the place of local traditions, this page will be updated. Keeping up with cancellations is a challenge and time-consuming. We regret errors, really we do.

Scenes of penguins are on display, sandwiched between local enterprise throughout downtown Naperville, pitching plaid tidings to you and your kin for shopping locally in support of small businesses. Check out plaid bows on door handles!

For now, the page you’ve visited here is likely to have only updated happenings for the next six to eight weeks. Be sure to check the posted date/year. We regret so many community traditions are on hold due to the pandemic and the protocols in Illinois.

Naperville’s musical tradition since 1859!

From autumn through springtime, the Naperville Municipal Band performs indoors, mostly on stage at the Wentz Concert Hall in the North Central College Fine Arts Center. Next up is the Holiday Concert is set for 3PM Sun., Dec. 19, 2021.

Strike up memorable music classics and upbeat marches with the city band that’s been around since 1859! Supported by the City of Naperville and its SECA Fund, Naperville Municipal Band Concerts, with enlightening narration by emcee Ann Lord, are free of charge and open to everyone. Always stay tuned from one season to the next…

Here’s a little more about PN’s website…

Since September 2001, Positively Naperville has been on a mission to focus on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness via the bright side of can-do spirit with smiles and good news. Grab your comfortable walking shoes and head Downtown Naperville to plan to shop ’til you drop (an old saying from the late 1900s!). Find plenty of treasures in local shops in between delicious meals at eateries around town, sure to ignite delight.

Stop by Dean’s Fine Clothing, downtown Naperville’s men and women’s shop since 1959! Think small and think plaid…The sales associates at Dean’s say they’re “mad about plaid” this holiday season.

Remember! Help keep the community safe. Pandemic or not, stay home when not feeling well. Follow local advisories and protocols upon entering a business or restaurant. Always cover coughs and sneezes. That’s just commonsense.

Most importantly, help protect physical and mental health of everyone around you. Eat healthful foods. Drink plenty of water. Take in fresh air and sunshine whenever possible.

Wash your hands often, but don’t wash away your commonsense.

Hold onto hugs for future giving. Keep a 3′ to 6′ social distance. Take walks and appreciate the changing seasons. Call family and friends.

Have faith, hope and charity to fulfill unmet needs of less fortunate with appreciation for all critical care providers and first responders.

Be safe and continue vigilance. Follow best practices.  Play it safely so all businesses can thrive again. Aim with enthusiasm to get all small businesses to remain open!

Think plaid. Think small. Enjoy all the holiday designs present in store windows throughout Naperville, N.E.W.S.

Then celebrate safely. Thank you.

Longstanding events posted here are open to the public, providing plenty of happenings featuring local culture, social engagement and community spirit in Naperville, Illinois.

Events featured here are repeats. First-time events have yet to become traditions.

For information regarding sending news for consideration to PN, please CLICK HERE.

Note also that some special event organizers send printed invitations via their acquired mailing lists with “save the date” messages as reminders. Invitations to community fundraisers listed here are not intended to be exclusive. Everyone is welcome. It’s likely once you attend, you will receive invitations in the mail.

The events listed here, many free*** of admission charge, invite all individuals to catch the spirit whether by personal invitation or not. (Note! At this time, many events remain in limbo, depending on success of the fight against COVID-19. We’re trying to keep up with cancellations and reschedules.)

Not all exact dates for 2021 have been determined through the end of the year, but place-holder dates are listed as reminders when events are still pending. (Be sure to check that the year is “2021” or “2022.”)

Students often participate in parades and other local traditions; however, school concerts and performances are not necessarily listed here. Thanks for supporting the arts at North Central College and in our schools when they begin again. School performances are not happening now.

Have a meaningful, safe and happy year with peace and good health.
