As July arrives, we often think about patriotism. One definition of that word is loyalty. Loyalty has many connotations and can mean devotion to one’s country, family, or neighbors. We sometimes show our loyalty to those we love through overt, intentional acts, and other times through quiet dedication.
Regardless, our expressions of loyalty ebb and flow depending on our life circumstances, our mood, or even our stress level. But there is someone whose loyalty to us never wavers… Our dog.
Whether our dog is young or old, large or small, it loves us unconditionally. Whether we are worthy of the loyalty it bestows upon us or not, our dog patiently waits for us to come home. He or she lovingly greets us each time the door opens, even if we are crabby or in a bad mood. The dog performs this act of loyalty every single time. Dogs also acknowledge our presence when we walk into a room, greeting us with a happy expression and a wagging tail.
Somehow, they seem to know when we are sad or discouraged, lonely or frustrated. They instinctively sense our feelings and offer a gentle nudge to remind us that they are there for us, even when we do not deserve their attention.
And if the unspeakable happens—if, in our darkest moments, our angst causes us to lash out in anger—our dogs still forgive us. Every. Single. Time.
Some experts say that dogs show loyalty by following us around, offering us their favorite toys or gazing into our eyes—an action linked to the release of the “love hormone.” Whatever form that loyal behavior takes, dogs value our companionship, and their demeanor shows us just how important we are to them.
How many of us can truly say that we show the kind of unwavering loyalty our dogs show us? Maybe we can learn a lesson or two from them.
At Lizzy’s Fund, we are amazed at how, even if a senior dog is given up to a shelter or rescue due to unforeseen circumstances that are beyond their control, they still acclimate to a new family. They exhibit love and loyalty to the new humans who adopt them. Their resilience is amazing and their love is boundless.
Won’t you consider giving a senior dog a new chance to show you unconditional love? We guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
