We talked back in January about New Year’s resolutions, noting that “decluttering” was one of the Top 3 that people put on their list. It’s now the midpoint of the year and time to check in with you, my readers. How you are doing? Did you commit a certain time each week to tackle just one small job/closet/shelf at a time? Did you ask yourself, “Can I live without this item?” Now is time to help teach our children how to declutter their rooms and closets.
Summertime is a perfect time to have your child or teen declutter their room. Toys and books are good places to start. If your child has already read a book, then it’s time to donate it. Purging their toys now frees up space when new ones likely arrive for Christmas. It’s easier to clear out a closet/bookshelf now than during the busy holiday season in December.
St. Margaret Mary Church in Naperville is conducting a toy and book drive to help families in need throughout the Chicagoland area. They’re looking for gently used toys, games, Legos and children’s books for ages one to 15. Please wash toys before donating and be sure board games and puzzles have all their pieces. Children’s books should not have yellowed or torn pages.
It’s often better to work with your children to facilitate decision making when purging their toys/collections. Help your child by providing them with supplies like Ziplock bags for small game parts or puzzles, storage containers and batteries to replace in toys to be donated. NEVER store a toy with batteries inside because over time batteries can corrode and leak.
A promise of an ice cream run afterwards is a great motivator!
Drop off your donations to St. Margaret Mary Church at 1450 Green Trails Drive between 9AM and 3:30PM any day during the month of JULY. Find a large donation bin to the left of the Narthex in the church on the main floor. Thank you!
