Summer is here, and while longer days and warmer weather are welcome, they also typically bring an increase in vehicle related thefts across Naperville. One of the most frequent crimes this time of year is burglary to motor vehicles. Simply put, this is when someone enters your car to steal what is inside. The good news is in most cases, this crime is entirely preventable. In fact, over 80% of vehicles targeted last year were left unlocked.
Protecting your vehicle starts with simple habits:
- Lock your vehicle every time, no exceptions. Criminals look for easy opportunities, and an unlocked door is an open invitation. Breaking a window creates noise and attention, which are two things criminals actively avoid.
- Keep valuables out of sight. Better yet, remove them altogether. If you must store something, do it before you arrive at your destination so no one sees where you place it.
- Take your keys with you. Even quick stops can turn into costly mistakes if your vehicle is left running or accessible.
- Choose your parking wisely. Well-lit, high-traffic areas reduce the chances of becoming a target.
- Don’t leave garage door openers in plain view. Treat them like a house key; if someone gets into your car, they may gain access to your home.
- Stay alert and report suspicious activity immediately. The sooner police are notified, the better the chances of preventing or solving a crime.
- If your vehicle is burglarized, don’t touch anything and contact the police right away. Avoid disturbing the scene so evidence can be collected.
Remember, “locking it up” goes beyond your car. Secure your home, too, by locking doors and windows and closing your garage.
