Fire Prevention 24-7 – Hello July! Fireworks and Grilling Safety

-

Summer is a season filled with fun, family gatherings and outdoor adventures. From backyard cookouts and Fourth of July celebrations to family reunions, picnics, camping trips and long-awaited vacations, warm weather gives us plenty of reasons to spend time outside. Whether you’re roasting marshmallows around a campfire, enjoying a day at the lake or hosting a neighborhood barbecue, a little preparation can help ensure that everyone stays safe while making lasting memories.

One of the biggest summer safety concerns involves outdoor cooking. Each year, thousands of Americans are injured in grill-related accidents and fires, with many incidents occurring around the Fourth of July holiday. To reduce the risk, make sure your grill is cleaned regularly. Grease and food residue can build up over time and become a serious fire hazard. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby whenever you’re grilling and never leave a hot grill unattended. It’s also important to place your grill a safe distance from your house.

A good rule of thumb is that if you can open the grill lid and it touches the house, it’s too close. Move it to the far side of your deck or patio before lighting it. If you use propane, store extra tanks outdoors or in a shed, never inside a garage.

Fireworks are another popular part of summer celebrations, but they can be dangerous when handled improperly. Fireworks cause thousands of fires and millions of dollars in property damage each year. Many people are surprised to learn that sparklers can burn at temperatures of up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to cause severe burns. Keep sparklers away from young children and consider attending a professional fireworks display instead of setting off your own.

In Illinois, sky lanterns are illegal because they pose a significant fire risk.

Don’t forget other seasonal safety basics. Stay hydrated during hot weather, wear sunscreen with adequate SPF protection and take breaks in the shade when spending extended time outdoors. Be especially mindful of children, older adults and pets, all of whom can be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Summer should be a time for relaxation, laughter and creating happy memories with family and friends. By following a few simple safety precautions, everyone can enjoy the season while staying healthy, safe and ready for all the adventures summer has to offer.
