Watch and learn…
Since the early days of Positively Naperville in 2001, we have encouraged readers to follow local governing bodies by attending regularly scheduled meetings. Of course, that was before social media and anonymous commentary were so ever present. Considering all the challenges that could unite our community back at the turn of the new millennium, it was our hope that interested audience members could/would watch meetings without missing any of the thoughtful discussion of elected officials while addressing public policy or comments by the interested public.
Watching local governing bodies in action, in our opinion, is the best way to get to know public officials that have been elected to serve. Watching also is a way to avoid “hearsay.”
Times have changed considerably during the last 25 years and now meetings are available around the clock on YouTube, making it more convenient to have easy access to watch. The popular online video sharing service was founded on Valentine’s Day 2005, followed by domain registration later that same day. The YouTube site officially launched to the public much later in 2005.
For several years, use of YouTube has permitted park district and school district meetings to be more accessible to the public as board meetings can viewed on more platforms, including computers and smart TVs.
What’s more, the City of Naperville recently announced that beginning Jan. 20, 2026, City Council meetings and public workshops now will be streamed live and available on-demand on both the City’s streaming media platform and Naperville’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/OfficialNapervilleIL.
Public comments are enlightening & engaging
Public comments are welcomed at regularly-scheduled meetings for Naperville City Council, Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners as well as school board meetings for District 203 and District 204. Some meetings attract hours of public comments (up to three minutes each) representing many different opinions. The tough job at times is distinguishing facts from fiction.
As December 2025 wrapped up the first quarter of this 21st century, public meetings in January 2026 kicked off the new year by addressing agenda items with a wide range of community challenges, thoughtful concerns and affordable solutions.
Thanks for paying attention. Note also that Early Voting in the Primary Election begins Thurs., Feb. 5.
None of the local municipal bodies are on the ballot. They’ll be on the ballot next April during the local Consolidated Elections. Be sure to stay turned. Local matters. Yet, it’s likely local residents are unfamiliar with the officials who create local public policy and budgets.
