Vitalant Naperville Report

Days before Christmas, Orin Albrecht completed his 500th blood and platelet donation, reaching a milestone achieved by only a small number of donors nationwide.

Albrecht marked the occasion at the Vitalant Naperville donation center, where he donates regularly and where staff recognized the milestone with a celebration!

While the recognition was meaningful, Albrecht said donating blood and platelets has long been part of his routine.

“It’s part of my life,” he said. “I just make it a part of my life. I know I’m helping people fighting cancer and patients in the hospital.”

Donor since his college days

Albrecht began donating blood while in college after being encouraged by a friend to participate in an on-campus blood drive. Although he was initially hesitant, he continued donating and has maintained a consistent schedule for nearly three decades.

He is both a whole blood and platelet donor, allowing him to donate frequently and support patients with a range of medical needs.

The timing of Albrecht’s milestone is significant. The holiday season is traditionally one of the most challenging periods for maintaining an adequate blood supply in local hospitals, as travel, weather, and busy schedules can reduce donor turnout, said Ann Sterling, Communications Manager for Vitalant.

Reaching 500 donations represents a long-term commitment and highlights the importance of regular donors in maintaining a stable local blood supply. Platelets, which have a shelf life of just five days, are especially critical for cancer patients, transplant recipients, and others undergoing intensive medical care said Sterling.

While many people donate blood once or a handful of times, reaching 500 donations places Albrecht among a very small group of donors. His milestone highlights the role long-term donors play in supporting patients in their community.

As the calendar turns to a new year, Albrecht said he plans to continue donating and is already looking ahead to celebrating donation number 600.
