A very jovial Target employee directed me today to a shopper’s dream, a check-out line that was going to open just when I needed it most, and I would be first up!

My overladen cart cascaded with items in myriad categories. Baby supplies, crockpot dinner ingredients, and bottled cold brew coffee, to name a few.

The checker was curious and chatty, and as those who know me well will attest, I am the queen of talking to strangers.

My psychiatrist father-in-law thought this behavior of mine odd (and told me as much), but I have observed that I feel energized when I connect with people from all walks of life throughout my day. Personal experience aside, there are studies that support that “relational diversity” increases one’s level of happiness.

But my way is not everyone’s way.

I have had a couple of recent experiences with strangers who missed the manners chapters in their upbringing—or perhaps spend so much time in some rude media echo chamber that they are under the misapprehension that they can behave badly, unchecked, and it’s now the norm.

This does not deter me from being sociable, but reminds me to practice self-restraint and to use my words wisely. And when there is an opening to compliment someone on their cheery behavior, I take that opportunity, too.

My Target checker shared that it would make her very nervous to have to manage a crowd for a holiday meal, never mind having her family move into her home for a week.

But me? I feel like a kid poring over the Sears Roebuck catalog at Christmas.

Our family has collaborated on a Google document showing children’s schedules and remote work blocks. Meal responsibilities have been assigned, and I have let go of cooking every single dish for a traditional Thanksgiving feast.

Our great adventure, being together in the family home in a new way, is upon us.

It is this mother’s dream. ©
