Holiday times are quickly approaching, bringing with them a sense of joy, warmth and anticipation. Homes and businesses will begin to glow with festive lights, while the crisp air brings memories of the season.

Baking is one cherished tradition that brings families and friends together to celebrate the holidays with warmth and sweetness. Passed down through generations, these recipes often carry stories, memories, and a sense of heritage; making each cookie, cake or pie more than just a treat. The process of mixing, decorating and sharing baked goods becomes an act of love, filling kitchens with comforting aromas that signal togetherness and joy. Whether it’s classic sugar cookies, spiced breads or festive pies, holiday baking creates opportunities to slow down, connect and share in the spirit of giving—making it one of the most treasured parts of the season.

This month members of the Naperville Woman’s Club will meet with the intention of taking a sugar cookie decorating class. My sister-in-law taught me the art of decorating sugar cookies, turning what seems like a simple recipe into a tradition filled with love and creativity. I learned not only how to measure and mix the ingredients, but also how patience and care make the dough just right. Rolling, cutting shapes and decorating became more than just steps – they were moments of laughter, storytelling and often quite a mess.

This event will be both entertaining and educational, building fellowship while creating an experience that allows members to leave with a new skill. The NWC holds several workshops throughout the year, focusing on music, art and education. See links below for the recipes that will be utilized for this event.

One more thing… While we’re on the topic of cookies…

If you’re out and throughout downtown Naperville in search of the Hidden Holiday Bears, be sure to check for Santa Paws, sitting in a window in the historic Naperville Woman’s Club Clubhouse with a letter to the kind Jolly Old Elf and the promise of cookies.

Note also, all kids are welcome to drop off their holiday wish lists at Santa’s Mailbox at the corner of Main Street and Jefferson Avenue.

Dear Santa…Thank you for giving us presents, and I love that you are jolly and kind. I will leave out carrots for the reindeer and milk and cookies for you. Love, Caitlin. (PN Photo)

Santa and his magic elves will send a personalized reply to your own mailbox! (Be sure to include child’s name and return address). Ho! Ho! Ho!
