For September, meet trombonist Cathrine Savino

Number of Years in NMB: 8 years

Past and/or Current Occupation: Band Director at CCSD 93

Hobbies and Interests Outside the Band: Pottery at Clay Space in Lisle.

How many years have you played the (instrument) and what drew you to it? I started in 5th grade. I picked the trombone because I thought we could borrow an old one from my uncle, who played as a student. While that trombone was long gone, I fell in love right away.

Why have you kept playing all these years? I’ve always enjoyed expressing myself through music and the technical challenges of attempting to master the instrument. My goal has always been to allow the technique to serve the art.

Do you play anywhere else? I’ve played throughout the Chicagoland area. I’ve played with the Palatine Concert Band, Wheaton Municipal Band, Illinois Brass Band, Chicago Brass Band, and Harper College Symphony Orchestra. As well as in many area churches and community theater pit ensembles.

Who was/is your greatest musical mentor? Why? Like many music majors, my private lesson instructor was pivotal in both my musical and personal development. William Harris, formerly of Syracuse University, was my mentor during a key time in growing into who I am today.

What makes NMB so special? The NMB is able to thrive because of community support. We have loyal audience members and the support of our local government. Naperville has shown up for the arts and we pay it forward by participating in the community in many ways from commemorative events to children’s concerts.

What’s your favorite memory or funny story from playing in the NMB? I’ve been fortunate enough to conduct the ensemble and play as a soloist. I loved the process of preparing a solo with a concert band. The performance was very special to me playing a trombone classic with our former director Ron Keller. However, conducting the band was the most humbling and special experience to date. I was honored to conduct such a high caliber of musicians. More than that, I could feel their support through their performances. I’ll never forget that feeling.

An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
