Get ready for two days of precision, strategy, and excitement. The RA Faganel Hall at Elmhurst University will be buzzing September 27–28 as athletes, coaches, and volunteers come together for the Chicagoland Regional Boccia Tournament.
Courts will be set up, strategies practiced, and last-minute tips shared, all leading to thrilling competition featuring players from across the Midwest.

Boccia (pronounced BOC-cha) is a fast-paced, precision ball sport for wheelchair athletes played on an indoor court. Precision, strategy, and skill are key as athletes roll or throw balls toward the “jack,” with points awarded based on proximity. Originally developed for individuals with cerebral palsy, boccia welcomes athletes with a wide range of physical disabilities and has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1984. This tournament will be a showcase of skill, strategy and adaptive athleticism you won’t want to miss.
Athletes from across five states will compete in this USA Boccia–sanctioned event, hosted by Synergy Adaptive Athletics (SAA) in partnership with USA Boccia. Several members of the SAA Boccia Team, some with national and international recognition, are expected to take part.
“This tournament is always a great event because the athletes pull off some truly impressive shots,” said Phil Eide, SAA/WDSRA Athletics Manager. “First-time volunteers and spectators are always amazed by the precision and strategy that go into every throw. It’s also a wonderful entry point for new players and families to experience what boccia is all about.”

Expanding Opportunities for Veterans
The tournament reflects new opportunities for veterans too. Since partnering in 2023 with the Vaughan Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, several former service members have joined the SAA team and are expected to compete.
Building the Next Generation
Preparations extend beyond the athletes too. On September 6, certified head boccia referee Roberta Flanders—who has officiated tournaments in Canada, Brazil, and Hong Kong—will lead a referee training session for local therapeutic recreation students. This ensures the next generation of officials is ready to support boccia’s growth in the Midwest.
