In late July, I read in one of the digital articles I receive, notice that the federal government was releasing several billion dollars to Universities related to research. While I don’t know how much of this money was related to Autism research, it took me to a study I read recently that dealt with genetics and its underlying role having a better understanding of Autism.
While admittedly “way over my skis” pertaining to understanding all of the details that were presented in a paper published by several scientists in July 2024 and accepted May 2, 2025, this paper was intended to “unravel the phenotypic and genetic complexity of autism,” trying to better understand the “biology, inheritance, trajectory and clinical manifestations of the many forms of the condition.”
This paper caught my eye given our relationship with Northwestern University and our efforts to help families connect with the University to participate in studies if they choose to do so. The other reason it caught my eye is that there has been a great deal of publicity related to trying to determine what the cause of Autism is. The study did find some interesting correlations with genetic data taken from a source of data involving 5,392 individuals involved in a nationwide data-base.
Big picture, the clinicians involved in the study were able to create seven specific categories within their research parameters that resulted in the creation of four different classes of distinction for comparative purposes. The seven categories that were defined are as follows: Limited social communication, restricted and repetitive behavior, attention deficit, disruptive behavior, anxiety and/or mood symptoms, developmental delay (DD), and self-injury. What became interesting was how the scientists were able to then create four different classes.
The first class, named Social/Behavioral, demonstrated greater difficulties across core autism categories of social communication and restricted and/or repetitive behaviors compared to other autistic children, as well as disruptive behavior, attention deficit, and anxiety but no reports of developmental delays.
The second class, named Mixed ASD with DD, had a stronger presence of developmental delays in their assessment compared to nonautistic siblings. Presence of repetitive behaviors and self-injury was noted in the descriptions as well.
The last two classes were termed “Moderate challenges” and “Broadly affected” where the clinical assessments compared to siblings who were nonautistic presented some findings but not as significant as others.
So, what should we take from this new information and very thorough study? While individuals on the Autism Spectrum might fit into different classes for understanding purposes, everyone has their own unique needs when compared to others. These new classes may lead to additional information and direction we haven’t given thought to.
Second, maybe more important is that continuing to do research and better understand where genetics, the environment, and other factors are of value. I’m glad that money for research is now being made available to institutions. Future generations will benefit from these investments, which is most important!
