Naperville Police Host ‘Safety for the College-Bound Student’ Webinar

As many new college freshmen are getting ready for move-in day on college campuses across the nation, the Naperville Police Department wants to help parents send off their young adults with the necessary knowledge and skills to keep themselves and their property safe.

Crime prevention specialists from the Naperville Police Department will present “Safety for the College-Bound Student” at 6:30PM on Thursday, July 31. The webinar for college freshmen and their parents combines drug and alcohol education with critical personal safety information. It is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. A link to the webinar is available at www.naperville.il.us/backtoschool or by clicking here.

Residents who do not have the Zoom application downloaded on their device will be able to view the webinar using their internet browser by clicking the “Join from your browser” option. A recording of the webinar will be made available on the City’s website after-the-fact for those who are not able to attend but are interested in learning more about this critical topic.

“This is the first time we’re presenting this topic as a webinar, and I really hope this new format gives more families the opportunity to participate and learn how to keep our young adults safe while on campus and away from home,” said Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres. “Naperville is a very safe community and because of that our children can develop a false sense of security. This class will help students learn strong crime prevention strategies and make them aware of some of the dangers of campus life and how to safeguard themselves.”

Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres

This presentation will empower students and parents with essential knowledge and practical strategies about personal safety, drugs and alcohol. Presenters will engage in candid discussions about the temptations and challenges often encountered by new college students, helping them understand the potential legal, personal and academic consequences of their decisions. Emphasis will be placed on utilizing situational awareness and practicing responsible behavior to keep themselves and their property safe.

Apply now for Fall Citizen Police Academy, an interactive 10-week course that begins Sept. 17, 2025

The Naperville Police Department is now accepting applications for a 10-week Citizen Police Academy (CPA) to be held this fall. The academy will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, and continue every Wednesday night until Nov. 19. Applications are due by Wednesday, Aug. 13, and will be considered in the order they are received.

Naperville’s Citizen Police Academy gives citizens insight into the inner workings of police operations, practices and objectives. Instruction consists of classroom lectures, interactive discussions and hands-on demonstrations focusing on various aspects of police work, including patrol, investigations, forensics, and special response, among others.

“CPA is an excellent opportunity for a behind-the-curtains peak at how the police department in Naperville does business,” said Police Chief Jason Arres. “The class allows residents to see what the day-to-day looks like for our personnel, and it introduces them to the many different ways we are working to protect and serve our community. If you’ve ever wondered about our policies, tactics, equipment, training or any other topic concerning policing in Naperville, you’ll learn all that and more at CPA.”

Free Citizen Police Academy runs Sept. 17 thru Nov. 19

All classes are free and will be held at the Naperville Police Department, 1350 Aurora Ave., from 6:30 to 9:30PM. Class size is limited due to course content and activities. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must either reside or work in the City of Naperville. A criminal background check is conducted on each applicant.

Interested candidates should print and complete the Citizen Police Academy application and waiver found at www.naperville.il.us/cpa and return the signed documents no later than Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025, to Jim Pacetti by email at PacettiJ@naperville.il.us, at fax number (630) 305-7004, or through the mail or in person at the Naperville Police Department, 1350 Aurora Avenue, Naperville, IL 60540.
