As the population of seniors increases, “aging in place” is becoming more than a buzzword – it is a powerful movement. Aging in place refers to the ability of older adults to live in their own homes safely, comfortably and independently for as long as possible. It emphasizes staying in your own home rather than moving to a retirement or assisted living facility. It focuses on autonomy and continued connection to the community.

Safety in the home is paramount to being able to age in place successfully. Thankfully, technology and supportive services can help make this happen. Smart home devices and medical alert systems are wonderful investments to increase safety. Home modifications such as stair lifts, walk-in tubs and widened doorways can help make homes more accessible.

Aging in place doesn’t happen automatically, though. It requires planning in advance: financially, logistically, and emotionally. Although cost is certainly a factor to consider, it also requires developing a social network of care: family, neighbors, friends, and personal caregivers who can be depended on when needed. Transportation is also an issue, so advance planning on how to get around should be considered and arranged.

While remaining at home is a common preference, it may not be for everyone, especially those individuals who are at risk for falls, those who are more isolated, and those who may be less likely to handle emergency situations that may arise.

The decision to age in place allows older adults to retain a high level of control over their lives, but it also requires extensive planning with realistic expectations.

Carpe Diem!
