Update, July 6, 2025 / Today we’re mindful that Naperville Responds dates back to the widespread devastation and heroic sacrifices that occurred when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in late August 2005. Back then, this community’s attention and many local church groups recognized a great need for prayers, fundraising and help to rebuild.
Our City organized Naperville Responds and chose to assist Pass Christian, Mississippi. When that initiative was finished, and with the inspired dedication of Jack Persin, the mission of Naperville Responds became to serve needs of Veterans. A decade after Hurricane Katrina hit, PN received a Christmas greeting from Ron Daley, a local photographer in Pass Christian, who’d kept us apprised of progress from the get-go.
While catching up on this weekend’s news, thoughts turn to the extraordinary and catastrophic flood event in Kerr County, Texas. Time, talent and prayers are needed during the search and rescue mission.
God bless all first responders and Veterans for their heroic sacrifices here, there and everywhere whenever needed.
Original Post, July 5, 2025 / The spirit of community and gratitude was strong at the Naperville Responds For Veterans Independence Day Freedom Ruck. The annual event that stepped off at 8AM on July 4, 2025, was a touching tribute to America, our independence and all those who have served our great nation.
Ruckers marched over five miles with weighted vests and backpacks along the Riverwalk, DuPage River Trail and throughout Downtown Naperville — finishing at the VFW of Naperville.

“Fabulous Ruck March yesterday!” wrote Jim Hoch. “The heat was a wee bit oppressive, but I was reminded that in Vietnam it was far worse, so just suck it up buttercup…..well, I adlibbed that last part.
