The need for blood doesn’t take a summer vacation, and one local family knows that all too well.
On Saturday, June 28, the Save Our Summer Blood Drive will stop in Naperville at the 95th Street Library (3015 Cedar Glade Dr.) from 10AM to 3:30PM, giving community members a chance to help patients like Caleb Koenig, a Plainfield 8-year-old whose life was saved by blood donors.
Caleb was born with TAR Syndrome, a rare genetic condition characterized by the absence of the radius bone in both forearms and a low platelet count (a condition known as thrombocytopenia). As a baby, Caleb’s body couldn’t produce enough platelets on its own — putting him at serious risk for bleeding complications. In his first year alone, he required monthly transfusions to survive. Today, thanks to the generosity of blood donors, he’s thriving — playing baseball, practicing Taekwondo, and living life to the fullest.
“People we never met donated blood, and because of that, he got the treatment he needed,” said Caleb’s father, Chris Koenig, who is also the head women’s soccer coach at Lewis University. “That’s why we continue to give back by hosting blood drives in his name. We want the next family to have the same chance.”
Help prevent summer blood shortage
The Naperville stop is part of a larger two-day effort led by Vitalant, spanning 15 donation centers and 3 community blood drives across Chicagoland on June 27–28. The goal: prevent a summer blood shortage, a common challenge when school breaks and vacations reduce donor turnout.
“Summer is when the need for blood spikes — but donations tend to drop,” said Ann Sterling, Communications Manager for Vitalant. “Just one donation can help save up to three lives. Taking a few minutes to donate could be the difference for patients like Caleb.”
