All day today, May 27, memories of just yesterday kept us busy, downloading photos from another photographer’s camera.
From one photo to the next, we were mindful of a thought-provoking column a year ago that appeared in the Wall Street Journal titled “Teach Your Children to Love America” by Peggy Noonan. Noonan’s kind words included the meaning of Memorial Day and the importance of love. The column she wrote last year was inspired by the New York schools’ 1900 “Manual of Patriotism,” a book that teaches this nation’s history via poems and songs. It’s available via a search online.
Yesterday was a little too cool for many early morning outdoor activities, but just perfect for sitting, standing and watching the Memorial Day Parade in full stride along Jackson Avenue to Washington Street and north to Benton. Headed next toward Ss. Peter and Paul, many folks parted ways to parked buses while others headed to the Memorial Day Observance at the Naperville Community Center in Central Park.
All during Memorial Day observances at Veterans’ memorials and Veterans Park followed by the 97th Naperville Memorial Day Parade, our thoughts were to avoid being spoon fed by soundbites suggesting nobody knew what Memorial Day observed. Here in Naperville we were confident observances again would open minds, hearts and eyes, and be thoughtful about the day for the love of peace. Yes. Naperville responds for Veterans.
Why was Memorial Day was created? Who we are honoring? What will our youth value in future generations?
We observed thousands of families lining both sides of the streets, all of whom remembered to observe Memorial Day with respect and gratitude in tribute to all Veterans and their families that have sacrificed for this great nation.
And we wondered if a legacy of love for country and its liberty could join the Memorial Day remembrance?

What’s the best way to teach children to love their country? Begin when they’re young. Simply put, teach the colors of the stars and stripes on the American Flag and remember Flag Day on June 14. Support the annual Buddy Poppy campaign during the week preceding Memorial Day. Wear the Buddy Poppy proudly to attend Memorial Day and Fourth of July Parades. Observe Veterans Day every year at 11AM November 11, a.k.a “11-11-11.”
As we wrap up another meaningful Memorial Day observance, let us also express deep gratitude to everyone who helped all year to plan special tributes that provided ways for local scouts, families and Veterans to participate in support of all the activities this past week.
Special thanks to the leadership of the Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873, the Naperville American Legion Post 43 and the City of Naperville for carrying on the tradition of hosting the annual Naperville Memorial Day Parade.
Thanks for reading. —PN
