Menopause is the stage in a woman’s life when her menstrual cycle permanently ceases, leading to the end of fertility. Some women may experience changes such as hormonal imbalances that lead to reduced sexual desire or discomfort during intercourse, mood swings, headaches, changes in hair growth patterns, acne, and accelerated aging of the skin.
With menopause comes loss of estrogen. Estrogen helps promote collagen production, increase skin thickness, and enhance moisture levels. The decrease in estrogen can trigger hormonal acne, as androgens—another group of hormones—may not decrease proportionately. This imbalance can increase sebum production, which clogs pores and contributes to the formation of acne and cysts.
One significant change during menopause is the reduction in collagen production, with research showing up to a 30 percent decrease in collagen levels during the first five years. Collagen is essential for skin elasticity and firmness, and its reduction contributes to sagging, wrinkles, and a loss of structural support.
Sun exposure, accumulated over a lifetime, compounds the effects of hormonal changes during menopause. The combination of reduced collagen and increased sun exposure often leads to more pronounced age spots and hyperpigmentation. These discolorations become more noticeable and can affect overall evenness of skin tone.
Without estrogen and progesterone, the ratio imbalance changes the way hair follicle’s function, although androgen levels do not increase post-menopause.
Treatments Available:
Microneedling: Stimulates collagen and elastin production, improving skin firmness, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and scars, and enhancing skin texture and tone.
Chemical Peels: Use a chemical solution to exfoliate and remove the outer layers of skin, revealing fresher skin underneath. This process can improve various skin concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, acne, scars, and uneven skin tone.
Facials: Aim to cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish the skin, addressing specific concerns like acne, wrinkles, and dryness. They can include cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, and application of serums and masks.
Micro-Channeling: Creates tiny micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production, leading to smoother, more even-toned skin. It’s a non-invasive procedure that can address fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin texture.
Micro-current Facial: Known as the “Natural Facial Lift,” this non-invasive treatment tightens, repairs damaged skin, stimulates collagen and elasticity, providing a healthier and younger appearance.
Vascular Laser Treatments: This treatment addresses several conditions including spider veins, rosacea, port-wine stains, venous lake and hemangiomas. It is also effective for telangiectasia, small-dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin and can help reduce the appearance of facial scarring and age spots.
